The Varsity Golf Match, played at Hunstanton in March 1962, ended in a tie with Cambridge’s David Simons missing a 3 foot putt for the victory. This was only the second tied match in 80 odd years.
We replayed the match in 2002 with the same result - a tie. However this time David Simons, always an august figure but now President of the O & C Golfing Society, played a hero's part holing from fifteen feet on the last green to win his match and save Cambridge from defeat.
A final deciding match will be played on 24 and 25 May at Brancaster and Hunstanton. This time the second teams - the Stymies and the Divots - are joining us to celebrate 50 years of serious fun. How fortunate are golfers to be able to indulge their sport for near a lifetime!
