Cambridge Alumni are invited to London for a great event, organised by University of Oxford, where alumni from Cambridge and Oxford Universities can come together to celebrate the Olympics! Held at the Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincolns Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE, the cost of a ticket is £15 per person.
The reception will include a panel discussion on 'the ethics of prosthetics' in the modern paralympic games. The panel will comprise expert speakers who will explore the distinctions made between the Olympics and Paralympics, together with their participants, and will address the recent controversies surrounding athletes like Oscar Pistorius, the South African 'blade runner' who has qualified for the 400m sprint at the 2012 Olympics.
- Stephen Frost (Hertford), Head of Diversity and Inclusion for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), was also named one of the top 100 influential LGBT people in the UK by the World Economic Forum.
- Alison Walsh (Somerville) is a former Zoologist at Somerville and currently heads up identification and development of disabled presenters and reporters to front the 2012 Games coverage.
- Justin Frishberg (Balliol) plays a sport known in the 1970s as ‘Murderball’ (due to its aggressive nature). Wheelchair rugby is now an established Paralympic event in which Justin has represented great Britain at both Athens and Beijing Games.
- After contracting meningococcal septicaemia at the age of 25, Diana Man replaced her previous legs with state-of-the-art carbon fibre ones. She has a passion for horses and will be presenting the para-dressage at the 2012 Paralympics.
- Mark Philp, our chair for the evening, is Fellow in Politics and Vice-Provost at Oriel College. A political philosopher, his 1982 study Children with disabilities and their familiesexamined the perception of disability in the family setting.
With Britain hosting the Olympics Games for the first time in sixty years, this event will celebrate the occasion, just one week before the opening ceremony. This is an opportunity for guests to meet fellow alumni and get in the mood for the forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
