Other London 2012 stories

How did you spend the London 2012 Olympics? We heard from a wide variety of alumni who were involved in the Games from spectators on Twitter to staff and volunteers who were instrumental in running the games.

The BBC's Olympics Data services
For the last 15 months or so Oli has been the Product Manager for the BBC’s Olympic Data services. They have built the systems which provide all of the London 2012 data to the BBC Sport applications and websites showing Olympics content.

Slipped disc to social media
Leading a team at Cambridge was a formative experience for Alex. Today, equipped with his most important piece of kit (his smartphone), he relishes his job as Head of New Media for the London Olympics: “it makes me extremely proud to be British.”

Doctor, doctor...
“My most important piece of kit isn’t really kit, but people. Our volunteers make the medical service at the Olympics a success, no matter what kit they have or problems they might face.”

Engineering the Games: 2012's sustainability
In September 2000, Peter became Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development in Cambridge’s Department of Engineering – the first post of its kind in the world. He contributed to the sustainability strategy for London’s 2012 Olympic Park in its early stages, and works on the sustainability of many major schemes.

Athlete to organiser - the other side of the medal
“When you are competing, you are focused on the pool and your event ... As an organiser, you see the thousands of details. It is a privilege to get the details right so all the athletes need to do is focus on the sport.”

2012's sustainability agenda: a new era for the built environment
For four years, Kirsten experienced the challenge of delivering sustainability on an immense scale. “Although you are acutely aware of missed opportunities, when other sustainability professionals visit the Olympic Park, they are astounded by what has been achieved.”

The best is yet to come: directing strategic programmes for 2012
“I started off thinking I would be a volunteer, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to make it a bigger full-time commitment ... as luck would have it, my perfect job came along.”

Carrying the Olympic Flame for The Brittle Bone Society
I am going to carry the Olympic Flame.  Just eight words, but they feel momentous.

A Summer of Olympic Proportions
I always love watching the Olympics, but this year I will be able to experience the joy of London 2012 first-hand.

Policing the Games
As a volunteer Special Inspector with the Metropolitan Police I will be helping to manage the policing of the games.

Singing in the Cultural Olympiad
As part of the cultural Olympiad, I (and some other Cambridge alumni) are singing Pure Gold: 4x4 Relay By Luke Carver Goss and Ian MacMillan.

Carrying the Olympic Torch for Magic Breakfast
It was a great honour to find out in March 2012 that I'd been chosen as an Olympic Torchbearer for the London 2012 Games. I was also thrilled to learn that I'd be carrying the Torch on 20 June in the village of Bedale in Yorkshire, a few miles from my hometown of York.

Paralympic Dressage
I am lucky enough to have been selected as a volunteer to be a dressage writer for the Paralympics.

Standing on the finish line at London 2012
I am very excited to be working at the London 2012 Olympic Regatta for the International Rowing Federation's (FISA) media team.
